When I worked as a full-time fundraiser, I needed to find a way to attract new donors - not only to hit my goals for my job, but I also needed to meet the fundraising targets in order for my organization to succeed.

Fundraising is so important in all nonprofits, right?

It was challenging. As an annual giving officer, I was responsible for raising a minimum amount of revenue each year. It was tough to hit my goals. As I called new prospects and previous donors, they didn't return my calls. Who was I anyway?

I needed to find another way!

I always thought that social media was a great way to connect with people and at the time, I was good at using the two largest social media platforms - my friend Facebook and her cousin, Twitter.

I also used Linkedin, but mostly I used it for job hunting - never fundraising.

I thought, what have I got to lose? I got to work. I figured how I’d go about it. I updated my profile, I researched prospects and began searching for the people that I’d been assigned to meet with.

And I discovered so many new prospects.

For months my boss thought I was crazy for using Linkedin to connect with my prospects rather than the traditional methods like picking up the phone. I remember sending emails as well. You guessed it, they didn't email me back, either.

But, when I began using Linkedin, it all changed!

The people I was connecting with could see who I was and that I worked at the organization.

My contact activity grew that year! On top of that, I developed great habits to use social media for good.

And I've reached hundreds of people using this method ever since. It's simple, but effective.

Linkedin is one of the best tools for the modern fundraiser who wants to build relationships with people who care about the cause you are raising money for.
